A dhurrie is a flatwoven rug of South Asian origin, traditionally made from cotton on a handloom, though wool and blended-fiber dhurries are also common today. Like all flatweaves, it has no pile — the pattern is woven directly into the structure.

Dhurrie vs. kilim

Both are flatweave constructions and the terms are sometimes used loosely, but "dhurrie" specifically refers to the South Asian tradition — typically cotton, often in stripes, grids, or simple geometric repeats — while "kilim" refers to the tapestry-weave tradition from the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, usually in wool with bolder tribal or medallion motifs.

Why it matters to a buyer

Dhurries are lightweight, reversible, and well suited to casual and transitional interiors, and they are often more affordable than wool flatweaves. They are a common entry point for buyers wanting a flatweave program without a heavier investment.
